Cardigans
The cardigan never goes completely out of style for a reason. It’s not because it’s tried and true or because it doesn’t take risks. It’s because it does the work of solving so many actual dressing dilemmas so effortlessly that we don’t even realize it’s work at all. It’s the layer you reach for when your office AC is blasting freezer-chill. It’s what you throw over a dress when the night is colder than anticipated. It’s what elevates a simple outfit from “throw-together” to “you actually thought about this.”
We’ve been very particular about our edit because the category is massive and majority of it is just blah. We’ve all worn cardigans that pill after two washes, cling awkwardly to our bodies and make us look like we forgot to button our shirt, or just look fine on the hanger but don’t do anything for us when we put them on. NONE OF THESE. What we’ve included here are cardigans that actually withstand wear, drape beautifully, and look intentional.
There is a wide range of styles for a reason. Fine knit merino that looks nearly as sharp as a blazer when tucked into your favorite skirt. Big and boxy in a heavier weight that can actually serve as an outer layer instead of just waving at the concept of warmth. Classic cropped that looks great with high waisted trousers and doesn’t make you feel like you stole your sibling’s sweater. Longline options that fill in all the gaps when you need a coat substitute for wildly unpredictable weather. And since, well, most of the country that is…. unpredictable weather.
Speaking of weather, we’ve included a range of colors because seasonless style shouldn’t be boring or constrained. A great cardigan in a rich burgundy or faded sage green can do wonders for your wardrobe and will stretch your styling options beyond yet another beige cardigan. That being said, we have included some neutrals too, but only because they are actually really good ones. Basics that excel in both depth and versatility, not ones that check the “neutral” box and disappear into your outfit.
When done right, a cardigan isn’t a fail-safe option. It’s not your plan B. It’s an intentionally chosen piece that you wear again and again not despite the outfits it’s paired with, but because it upgrades them. Yours probably already proves this point.
