The waist is the most flattering place to draw attention. Case in point: the peplum. That subtle flare around the hip adds definition when you may need it and softens curves when you don’t. It gives every top a finished look that denying something as simple as a straight hem simply can’t beat. It’s subtle construction math we think is too often overlooked. Underrated, if you will.
Which is why we set out to only include peplum tops that did the trick. From work presentations to date night. Weddings that you’re attending to (but not starring in!) to dinners where smart casual is still so infuriatingly vague. The peplum plays it all because it straddles that happy medium between fancy and casual without looking like it’s trying too hard at either.
Speaking of trying too hard, we were particular about the proportion. Too long and it starts to looks like a skirt trimming disaster. Too short and it’ll hardly register. Here you’ll find each piece hits right at that sweet spot, with just enough flare at the bottom to create actual shape, not bulk. This matters more than you think. Because if you don’t get that proportion right, you’ll end up drawing attention to everything you don’t want to.
Similar care was given to fabric. Structured crepes that maintain their shape all day long. Softer woven options that look great tucked into a pair of wide leg trousers. Silk and satin for the nights when you know you’ll need something a little more special. Everything we’ve selected feels like actual clothes you want to wear, not something stiff and costume-y just for the sake of creating shape.
You’ll find some go to staples you’ll want to wear again and again. And others that may feel like a “what will I wear with this?” kind of purchase at first, but will end up sitting in your regular rotation months down the road. Regardless, each of these deserves your consideration. The peplum top is simply that: a solution to your shape dilemma that doesn’t ask you to do much in return.
